Dish Network has taken a significant step toward becoming the country’s fourth wireless carrier, one that it should have taken, oh, many months ago. According to Axios, the company’s 5G network, dubbed Project Genesis, has finally rolled out to paying clients in Las Vegas, after completing a beta trial that began late last year. For $30 per month, you get unlimited 5G data, voice, and text, as well as a white-glove delivery experience and exclusive access to the Project Genesis app, where you may earn incentives. NFTs are among the rewards.

The FCC has charged Dish Network with replacing Sprint as our fourth carrier as part of T-acquisition Mobile’s of Sprint. It’s pursuing an unusual path to get there, relying on open-source O-RAN technology and off-the-shelf hardware rather than a lot of proprietary components to develop its 5G network. Samsung is also involved, providing software and radios.
